Gara Rock, Devon

Throughout my life I have visited Devon many times, I even lived there for 4 years. However, it’s taken me quite a few years to visit Gara Rock. It’s not the easiest place to reach, but well worth the visit. Here is my photography blog of Gara Rock, Devon.

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Gara Rock is located within South Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the South Hams. The last section of the approach to Gara Rock is a drive along some very narrow lanes, so get ready for some reversing to allow passing. Gara Rock Hotel is a boutique hotel, that has recently been refurbished and relaunched by new owners. If you’re not staying you can still pay a small fee to park at the hotel.

Gara Rock Beach

A path from the hotel leads to the beautiful beach.

Coastguard Lookout

Gara Rock Hotel is a former coastguard station, here is the original lookout at the top of the cliff.

Walking from Gara Rock to Salcombe

Nearby Salcombe is a 50 minute drive away. However, by passenger ferry from nearby East Portlemouth it is just a few minutes away. To get to East Portlemouth there are a few options, varying in duration. The longest path is the section that follows part of the South West Coast Path, which allows you to enjoy some dramatic views of the coastline.

The walk is around 70 minutes and apart from the very last stretch is off of roads.

Gara Rock Hotel

if you don’t want to walk to the ferry at East Portlemouth and you’re staying at the hotel they will drop you off, and/or pick you up by their Landrover.

Gara Rock Sunset

Finally, some sunset photographs of the beautiful Gara Rock Beach.
