A Family Photography Session at Cameron House
Cameron House is one of my favourite places for family photography on Loch Lomond. Set within Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, the hotel provides a magnificent Scottish backdrop for photographs of couples, families and larger multi-generational groups.
I’m often invited to photograph guests while they are staying at Cameron House for a special occasion. It might be a milestone birthday, an important anniversary or simply a rare opportunity to bring everyone together in one beautiful place.
Whatever the reason, a family photography session can become a memorable part of the celebration—and create photographs that will continue to be enjoyed long after everyone has returned home.
Family photography at Cameron House
Over the years, I’ve particularly enjoyed meeting and photographing visitors from the United States. Having travelled to many parts of America myself, I’m always interested to discover where my clients have come from and what has brought them to Scotland.
For some, it is the dramatic scenery and a love of the outdoors. Others are exploring their Scottish ancestry or visiting places associated with their family or clan. Sometimes Scotland has simply been somewhere they have dreamed of seeing together.
Cameron House is an excellent base for such a visit. It combines the landscape of Loch Lomond with the comfort and facilities of a five-star resort. Its lochside setting, lawns, woodland and marina also give us plenty of variety within a family photography session.
A milestone birthday celebration from New York
I recently met Joyce and nine members of her family, who had travelled from New York to celebrate her milestone birthday. This wonderful group of ten women spanned several generations of the family.
The session had been arranged by Joyce’s mother, Victoria, and it was clear from the outset that a great deal of thought had gone into it.
Joyce told me how much she loved nature and how important it was for her to feel connected to the landscape. That connection was one of the reasons she had been drawn to Scotland.
Before travelling, she had spent time looking through my website to make sure that my style was right for her family. She particularly liked the way I photograph people naturally within the Scottish landscape, creating authentic pictures that show both the relationships between people and the beauty of their surroundings.
That was exactly what we set out to create beside Loch Lomond.
An explosion of colour beside the loch
What made this Cameron House photography session especially unusual was the family’s extraordinary collection of outfits.
Joyce had created and brought a coordinated look for the whole group. The theme might best be described as vibrant, contemporary witches: dramatic, playful and filled with vivid colour.
The outfits looked spectacular against the natural greens and blues of Loch Lomond. They brought an explosion of personality to the photographs and immediately gave the session a sense of fun.
It was a brilliant example of how clothing can help make a family photography session feel completely personal. The outfits were coordinated without making everyone look identical, allowing each woman’s individuality to come through while keeping the group visually connected.
Most importantly, the clothes felt true to the family. These weren’t costumes chosen simply for the camera—they reflected the creativity, warmth and joyful spirit of the women wearing them.
Natural photographs of the whole family
With a group of ten, I always aim to create a varied collection rather than concentrating only on one formal group portrait.
During this session, I photographed the entire family together as well as smaller groups, different generations and individual portraits of each woman. We also created plenty of spontaneous images as they walked, talked and laughed together beside the loch.
This combination gives every member of the family photographs that feel meaningful to them. It also tells a much richer story of the occasion: not just what everyone looked like, but how it felt to be together.
Although I offer guidance throughout a session, I don’t want the photographs to appear stiff or overly posed. I look for genuine expressions, natural interactions and those brief moments between the more organised pictures when personalities and relationships reveal themselves.
Joyce and her family made that wonderfully easy. Their energy was infectious, and the session was enormous fun from beginning to end.
Photographs to remember a special journey
A milestone birthday deserves to be remembered, particularly when it brings several generations of a family from New York to Scotland.
These photographs are a record of Joyce’s celebration, but they also capture something larger: ten women enjoying an adventure together in a place that meant a great deal to them.

This was one of the most enjoyable and distinctive family photography sessions I have undertaken. I loved the family’s creativity, their connection with one another and the way their colourful outfits came alive within the Loch Lomond landscape.
